August Food/Cultural Theme:
Hypocratia Festival
“It’s Greek To Me . . .”

Hypocratia is the Greek Goddess for whom Hippocrates was named. Every August, on the Greek island of Kos, the Hypocratia festival celebrates the life of Hippocrates with live musical, dramatic and artistic performances as well as athletic contests. Hippocrates, who lived here, is said to be the father of modern medicine, and the ruins at Asklepieion are those of a healing centre built on his teachings. Traditional dancing takes place along with many other activities, which are open for participation to people from Greece and abroad.

GREEK CUISINE

From hearty stews to warming soups and simple side dishes, traditional Greek food combines the freshest of ingredients from land and sea to create a highly appetizing and healthy cuisine. It is based around a variety of colorful and flavorful foods that are high in nutrients and low in animal fats.

Greek cooking is typical of Mediterranean cuisine, with strong influences from Italy, the Middle East and, to a lesser extent, from the Balkans. The basic grain in Greece is wheat, although barley is also grown. Important vegetables include tomatoes, eggplant, garlic, spinach, potatoes, green beans, okra, and onions.

Meat doesn't play a prominent role in traditional Greek cuisine. It's usually reserved for festivals and special occasions or used in small amounts as a flavor enhancer. The terrain favors the production of goats and sheep over cattle; beef dishes tend to be a rarity. Fish dishes are also eaten frequently, especially in coastal regions and the islands.

Olive oil, produced from the trees prominent throughout the region, adds to the distinctive taste of Greek food. Fruits are eaten either fresh, or preserved by drying. Popular varieties include apricots, grapes, dates, cherries, apples, pears, plums and figs. A variety of herbs and seasonings are used to flavor food including parsley, dill, oregano, cilantro, mint, ground pepper, sea salt and cinnamon. Lemon juice and lemon rind are also used to season food and in dressings.

Too much refinement is generally considered to be against the hearty spirit of the Greek cuisine. Traditionally, Greek dishes are served warm rather than hot.

DIRECTIONS:

Click for Map
DIRECTIONSFrom Valley Forge: 202 South to 926 South to 52 East to 1 South. From Plymouth Meeting: 476 South to 1 South. From Glenside: Go to Plymouth Meeting, Conshohocken, etc., and use 476 or 1 South. Or take I-95 South to 322 West to 1 South.

As you approach Longwood Gardens on Route 1 South, you will go under their overpass. Immediately turn left at the traffic light, proceed around the jug handle, stopping at the stop sign which is Greenwood Road. Turn right (heading away from Route 1 and Longwood Gardens, passing the Greenwood Elementary school) and proceed to the end of Greenwood Road.

Turn right onto Hillendale Rd., and proceed less than 1/2 mile to a multiway stop intersection, making an 11:00 left turn to the stop sign. If you are on course at this point, you will not have gone under the RR overpass you will see off to your right, and you will proceed through the stop straight onto Norway Road. (DON'T make a 90 degree left turn at the stop sign.) Immediately cross the railroad tracks. The mushroom house will be on the left and right of you just after you cross the RR Tracks. About a half mile later, you will see my stop sign, and our sign to park on the grass just prior to the sandstone stucco farmhouse. There is a couple acres so allow plenty of parking space for easy access and egress.

If you get lost, stop at something you can identify (like an intersection with street markers) and call 610-388-7903 so we can talk you in.

RSVP EARLY: Email or call Linda at 610-983-3050 or 610-246-6921 (cell).

FSMG - First Saturday Monthly Gatherings - Since 1997

FSMG MISSION STATEMENT

To create a welcoming wholesome space for monthly fellowship, food and fun; one which is free of smoke, alcohol, drugs, but full of a delightful smorgasbord of homemade vegetarian fare and abundant joyful creative expressions of the best life has to offer . . .

These Community Gatherings, held the First Saturday of every month (since 1997) are based on valued Missions beyond the usual definition of "party": FSMG members and guests are asked to help us practice and promote these Principles:
  • Simplicity & Natural Ways of Creating Happiness
  • Cooperative Community Building & Professional Talent-Sharing
  • Personal Spiritual Growth & Creative Empowerment
  • Intercultural Awareness and Appreciation
  • Intergenerational Interaction & Mentoring
  • Peaceful Coexistence & Interpersonal Respect
  • Vegetarianism & Environmental Conservation
The music ranges from gentle folk, pop, jazz, blues, sing alongs, to original songwriting, experimental intercultural jams and candlelit drumming circles with improvised percussion/drums; The art activities range from origami to cooperative gingerbread house making, and other theme crafts relative to Mission. The people range from seasoned professional performers to timid beginners or music appreciators, and range in age from toddlers and teens to elders. Well-behaved older children under 18 are very welcome, but must be in the company of the parent or designated adult at all times and be familiar with these Guidelines/Principles of Cooperation/Fair Play. Whomever comes and whatever we wind up doing, amazing synergy always results!

For more information about this month's FSMG or future Gatherings, to volunteer to help, offer your home as a venue for a future Gathering, or to share suggestions, please email FSMG Founder/Organizer Linda L. Hutchings at .
